Scholarships
Scholarship Applications are now being accepted for 2008!
Due May 1, 2008
To celebrate WJA’s 25th year, we are planning on awarding a minimum of $25,000 in scholarships this year. Make sure that you are a part of it. WJA is committed to empowering women in the international jewelry, watch and related businesses. To this end, WJA is offering scholarships to female students enrolled in courses related to the jewelry and watch industries in the United States of America.
This year, WJA has changed our application process. We are accepting applications in two different categories: Designer and Non-designer. The Designer category is based on images of finished work, created by the students. To apply for this category, you will use our online application at www.callforentry.org The Non-Designer category is essay based. To apply for this category, use the entry form below and send the entry to the address above. You may also click here to download the scholarship application.
In 2007, there were 69 applicants from 45 different schools. The WJA scholarship committee awarded $21,000 in scholarships to fifteen students. The 2007 winners are below:
$4,000 June Herman Scholarship
Terri Valencia – Arizona State University
Valencia is also co-owner of Metals Edge Studio, while she is finishing up her BFA in Metalsmithing. She would like to continue her education and pursue an MFA in order to offer classes that will be accepted as credit through the colleges and universities. “Terri’s work demonstrated knowledge of not only intricate detail work, but also anticlastic raising,” says Lisa Slovis Mandel, from Lisa Slovis Metalsmithing and Chairperson of the Student Scholarship Committee.
$3,500 Scholarship
Stacey Webber – University of Wisconsin, Madison
Webber’s studies have led her to make sculptural objects that are about jewelry, but are not physically wearable. Works such as “FancyWork: Jewelers Tools” embody traditional jewelry techniques and tools, but exist as sculpture. $3,500 Scholarship
Rebecca Barton – Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville
“Ulmus Cuprous” represents the ideas of nature and defense. The contrast of the organic imagery with the utilitarian function of the scale mail (overlapping, scale-like metal plates) presents a unique dichotomy.
$2,000 Scholarship
Carol Salisbury – Oregon College of Art and Craft
After 20 years of designing clothing, Salisbury has turned her attention to jewelry. She feels that the industries are related in that she is still concerned with proportion and balance as they reference the body.
$1,000 Scholarships
Rebecca Beals - East Tennessee State University
Fu-Ya Chen - Tyler School of Art
Iris Lin - California State University, Long Beach
Alexandra Speer - Rhode Island School of Design
Stacey VanWaldick - Syracuse University
