French Jewelry Exhibition - tour and Sunday Brunch

March 25, 2007 - Feel the French and Taste the Warmth

WJA Northern California had a small but intimate event at the Legion of Honor Museum in San Francisco on Mar.25th.2007 to tour the French Jewelry Exhibition.  It was held with a Sunday brunch so our members and family not only had great time viewing the masterpieces of French jewelry, but also had a taste of delicious foods.

We enjoyed a sumptuous prix fixe brunch, featuring local culinary treats and sublime live jazz by noted Bay Area musicians at the elegant Legion Café.  The highlight was the main course and the special dessert which made people’s mouth water.

The exhibition celebrated the astonishing inspiration, refined workmanship, and variety of French jewelry from the Art Nouveau period at the beginning of the 20th century to contemporary pieces. Featured in the show are works by the most famous Parisian jewelers. They begin with the sensuous Art Nouveau forms of René Lalique and Georges Fouquet, followed by the daring and exotic creations of Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels in the Art Deco era, and finish with the ingenious and beautifully made designs of JAR in the late 20th century.

Drawn entirely from American collections, this exhibition features more than 180 pieces from public museums, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and Hillwood Museum and Gardens in Washington, D. C., as well as pieces from private collections, including those of Dame Elizabeth Taylor and Iris Cantor. A fully illustrated catalogue accompanies the exhibition.

The event allowed our members to get to know each other and mingle freely.  Although the climate outside the museum was cold and foggy, the inside was warm and inviting with people from all over the world admiring the great masterpieces.

The Northern California Chapter had their first board meeting for 2007 on January 17.  We have reigned in the new board and are ready to kick off the year with new activities, speaker events, and of course the planning of the successful Designer’s by the Bay event.  Major goals for the year include increasing membership, providing grants and increasing the participation of existing members in Chapter events.

If you have any ideas or suggestions for the Northern California Chapter to continue to make WJA beneficial for you, please do not hesitate to contact us.
